Monday, September 14, 2009

All right everybody here's something I have stumbled upon while searching the Internet it's an absolutely cool site that is all about chicken-houses! OK OK I know it sounds funny at first....but then mabey not for those of you that have your own and don't necessarily have the time or equipment to build a functional and durable "chez-soi" for you chicken. So come and check them out while the prices are low and the quality high, you can even order online which makes things a lot easier for some of us :)

I hope you enjoy being woken up by your chickens in the morning as much as I do.....

Wood Bicycles will this new bamboo bike survive?

Friday, July 31, 2009

After being talked about for ages in obscure places, the idea has been brought to life! The bamboo bicycle is now starting to appear in the garages of the rich and healthy because honestly averaging the 12k per custom unit is a little over budget for most people. But the idea is now out there, it is therefore safe to assume that competition will lead to lower prices.

And still all of us skeptics that know that even if bamboo has been proven to be stronger than steel it doesn't prove that the bamboo bicycle will be reliable. Honestly only time will tell if problems related to such a machine will be avoidable. Wood expansion temperature and humidity variations will all have a degrading impact on the structure so it is interesting to see what new or old technologies might resurface to counter the problem.

One thing's for sure whoever get's a look and try at one of these new ecofriendly bikes immediately falls in love with the look and the feel of the smoother ride and rich colors as seen above (gorgeous bike by Calfee Design).

How To-Wood Finishes-Old looking Semi-Transparent

There are as many recipes for a beautiful finish as there are carpenters looking to design the next fad and trendy piece of furniture. For those of you who don't really know the what and how here are some basics with which you can't miss:

These are all applied either with an old cotton t-shirt leftover or with an air pressured spray gun. The method might seem a bit industrial, however once you get to compare the results of both out of the home hardware all in one finish and your own applied in layers you will see a major improvement. The investment is becoming lesser with each year as the market is expending in the home-small business category. My pressure and gun kit cost me in the 300$ and the variety of finishes/time saved/quality, were the main reason for the expense. Because as many of you are coming to realize or already have the finish you apply is the main factor in determining if your project is a success or a flop.

For an old look:

  • First apply the NGR(bright basic colour-gives richness to the primary colour-apply with gun or it dries too fast and leaves spots)
  • Second Wiping stain (choose a colour sheme with the NGR and do a test first)
  • Third Scellant (Make sure you have the right sandpaper grain 320 and sand just to say you did, or you will destroy the layer you have just applied)
  • Fourth You apply a Glaze (again make it transparent or fit into the color theme)
  • Fifth Two layers of Lacquer (because one is never enought and go for the matt opacity it's way less prone to scratching and the matt one looks more even)

Welcome everyone! Begining woodcarving

Wood sculpting or call it what you will, isn't for everyone in the business or even as a past time...
Having started different projects and and having only finished a few i can say that it is a learned skill that takes time. Here are some of the aspects that you will have to consider:
1-> Tools (and not only that but the sharpening stones but ways to fix your carving project to a solid surface)
2->Workshop (Outside or inside you absolutely HAVE to have a place that is easily
cleaned and let me tell you grass is NOT)
3->Multiple projects (You will fail fail and then want to redo your first carvings so get the right sizes of wood and quantity and if you don't.. well improvise ;)hehe..let's just say that my backyard trees are missing some of branches this summer...
4->Your imagination(it's a lot easier drawing what you want to carve than actually applying your ideas in 3D so always make a front and side view.
5->Use environment friendly finishes ppl. come on it's up to us now.
